WSASCD, Whitworth University and Leadership Innovation Team are pleased to announce a new school culture and climate initiative in Washington State. Schools are invited to submit an application to be recognized as a Washington State School of Character. Details about this process follow. Feel free to contact any of the sponsors if you would like more information or have questions.

What is it?

State Schools of Character (SSOC) awards are an extension of the National Schools of Character (NSOC) program sponsored by the Character Education Partnership (CEP) in Washington, D.C. The purpose of both the National and State Schools of Character awards is to identify exemplars in character education and facilitate their leadership in mentoring others. The goal of the national program is to provide a variety of models of comprehensive, quality character education, representing America’s diverse educational system.

State Recognition

The WA SSOC award winners will receive an award from the state sponsors and the opportunity to move forward to the NSOC competition. By identifying exemplary sites on the state level, the SSOC project helps to develop a state-level mentoring network among educators.

Why Apply?

Applicants find the process beneficial since it is a chance to conduct a thorough selfassessment and receive detailed feedback. SSOC and NSOC winners receive press coverage and the right to use the SSOC and NSOC awards name and logo.

Criteria for Selection

CEP and state evaluators use CEP’s Character Education Quality Standards as the scoring rubric to screen applicants. You can download this rubric from the CEP website.

Who can apply?

Any U.S. public or private K-12 school that is already engaged in some sort of character education program or who wants to get started.
